The aim of this programme is to provide the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work with children and their families, maintaining a healthy and safe environment and supporting the development of the child through play and a variety of other activities in an Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) setting.

On successful completion of the programme, learners may progress to further education and training.


  • Education: Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a FETAC Level 4 Major Award or its equivalent.
  • Aptitude: Applicants should have a positive outlook and demonstrate an interest in working in the childcare sector. Applicants should be adaptable, reliable, trustworthy and be committed to continuous training. A good standard of written and spoken English and attention to detail are essential.
  • Previous Experience: Applicants should, where possible, have some previous experience working in a Childcare environment. This exposure will help to establish an applicants suitability for Childcare as an occupation.

Manually lift and move objects and loads safely. Communicate verbally and nonverbally in standard everyday tasks and in work-related tasks, operating independently while under general direction. Work under direction with children, their families and colleagues within early childhood care and education settings being competent in Early Childhood Care and Education Practice. Provide for the health and well-being of children and maintain healthy, hygienic and safe practices and environments in a range of early childhood care and education (ECCE) settings. This includes the implementation of best practice regarding health and hygiene for children, managing dietary requirements, and, caring for an unwell child. Explain what holistic development is and identify suitable play activities that promote the various stages of development and learning 0-6years. Use observations to plan for children?s development and apply theoretical knowledge to understand about how children learn. Describe a broad range of influencing factors that impact on a child?s development. Evaluate their role and practice in terms of supporting the development and learning of the child. Ensure that each child's learning, development and well-being is facilitated through the provision of opportunities, experiences, activities, interaction, materials and equipment, having regard to the age and stage of development of the child and the child's cultural context. Work in an organisation or specific vocational context, carrying out vocationally related tasks over a period of time, independently while under general supervision. Plan and achieve realistic work goals.
